About Akhar
Akhar (ਅੱਖਰ, "letter") is a free website for learning Punjabi typing in the Raavi font on the Gurmukhi INSCRIPT keyboard: the font and layout used in typing tests for Punjab government clerk, typist and data entry posts.
Why it exists
It started with a family member preparing for a Punjab government exam. The practice tools available online were unreliable: they crashed in the middle of a test, did not teach the keyboard from the start, and scored tests in ways that did not match the official notices. Akhar was built to fix that. It is fast, works on any modern browser, and keeps working even on a slow connection because everything runs on your own device.
What you get
- Step-by-step lessons. 57 lessons in seven stages teach the INSCRIPT layout a few keys at a time, from the home row to addak, pair bindi and half letters, then words, sentences and full paragraphs.
- An on-screen keyboard that lights up the next key and names the finger to use.
- Practice passages written in the style of exam passages on Punjab, history, the environment, education and office work.
- A timed exam test that counts full and half mistakes and reports gross speed, net speed and accuracy, following the method published in Punjab typing-test notices.
- Progress tracking with a speed chart and a map of the keys you miss most.
Free to use
Akhar is free and needs no account. Your progress is stored only in your own browser. To keep the site running, it may show a small number of ads from Google on pages that are not used for typing. Ads never appear on the lesson or exam screens.
Independent
Akhar is not connected to the Punjab Subordinate Services Selection Board (PSSSB), any university, or any other recruitment body. Rules can change from one recruitment to the next, so always read the official notice for your post.
